Buying Process
How do I request a quote for my carbide scrap?
You can request a quote by calling us, sending an email, or using our WhatsApp link. Sending clear photos of the material, its approximate weight, and your location allows us to provide a quick initial estimate.
Do I need to sign a contract to sell my scrap to you?
No. We work with shops on a transactional basis. You can sell to us as a one-off accumulation or arrange regular weekly, monthly, or quarterly pickups without contract lock-ins.
Do you accept brand new overstock tools or only scrap?
We buy both. We purchase broken, chipped, or worn-out tooling for recycling, as well as brand new overstock, discontinued inventory, and surplus tooling. Surplus tooling can often be valued higher depending on the grade and quantity.
What happens after I submit a quote request?
We review your details and provide a price range. If the estimate aligns with your expectations, we coordinate a travel date and schedule a pickup at your facility.
Is there a minimum weight requirement to sell?
We work with accumulations of all sizes. For Southern Ontario (GTA and surrounding areas), we can pick up smaller lots (50+ lbs). For provinces outside Ontario, we generally require larger bulk accumulations to justify the transit and logistics overhead.
Pricing & Market Rates
How do you calculate the price per pound for carbide scrap?
Pricing is calculated based on three factors: 1) The exact type of carbide and its chemical composition. 2) Global commodity market index values for tungsten (W) and cobalt (Co). 3) Purity and sorting levels of the lot.
Does the price of carbide fluctuate?
Yes. Tungsten and cobalt prices fluctuate weekly based on international trade, supply levels, and refining demand. We update our pricing calculator and quotes to reflect these current market changes.
Why is clean carbide valued higher than mixed carbide?
Clean carbide contains no steel, shims, screws, or brazing alloy. Refiners can melt clean carbide directly or process it using the zinc method. Mixed carbide contains steel attachments, which must be separated—adding processing costs and reducing the net weight of the actual carbide.
Are there any hidden fees or travel deductions?
No. The price we quote you is the final amount we pay. We do not deduct separate logistics, scaling, or transport fees; all travel expenses are factored directly into our initial per-pound offer.
Pickup & Logistics
Do you charge for pickup?
No, pickup is free of charge. We travel directly to your machine shop, warehouse, or facility to weigh the material and load it into our vehicles.
How quickly can you arrange a pickup?
For regions in Southern Ontario (Toronto, GTA, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener) and Montreal, we can often schedule same-day or next-day pickup. Other areas are scheduled to match our regional transit routes, typically within a few business days.
Do you provide buckets or containers for storage?
Yes. For machine shops that accumulate carbide regularly, we can provide heavy-duty 5-gallon storage buckets to hold your spent tools. We swap these buckets for empty ones during our pickup visit.
Can you pick up from remote mining or manufacturing sites?
Yes. We travel across Canada. For remote or distant facilities, we either include the location in our transit routes or arrange prepaid LTL freight collection for substantial accumulations.
Payment Methods & Timing
When do I receive payment for the scrap?
We pay you on the spot before leaving your facility. Once the weight is verified on our calibrated digital scales, payment is initiated immediately.
What payment methods do you support?
We support direct deposit, secure electronic transfer, and business checks. Let us know your preference before the pickup date so we can prepare.
Do you provide weighing receipts or compliance documents?
Yes. We issue a weight and receipt document at pickup, detailing the net weight, material type, per-pound price, and total payout. This is ideal for your shop's inventory or waste audits.
How do you verify the weight of the scrap?
We bring certified, calibrated industrial digital scales directly to your shop. We weigh the buckets or bins in your presence, deduct the tare weight of the container, and determine the exact net weight of your carbide.
Materials & Grading
What is 'clean' carbide vs. 'brazed' or 'tipped' carbide?
Clean carbide consists of solid carbide tooling (like inserts or end mills) with no steel backings, brazing alloy, or iron attachments. Brazed or tipped carbide refers to tools where a carbide insert is welded onto a steel holder (like SDS drill bits or concrete planning teeth). Separate them to get the highest rate for your clean carbide.
Do you buy high-speed steel (HSS) tools?
We buy carbide. While we will purchase HSS tools if they are mixed into your carbide buckets, they are valued at standard steel scrap rates, which are significantly lower than tungsten carbide. We encourage shops to keep HSS separated.
What is carbide sludge and do you accept it?
Carbide sludge is fine grinding swarf mixed with oil or coolant, generated during tool regrinding. We buy sludge. It should be sealed in leak-proof 5-gallon buckets or 55-gallon drums. Pricing is calculated on a dry-basis tungsten analysis.
Do you purchase tungsten carbide powder?
Yes. We buy dry tungsten carbide powders, thermal spray powder residues, floor sweeps, and dust collector fines. These must be kept in sealed, moisture-free containers.
How do you test the purity of the scrap carbide?
We bring handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrographic analyzers. By shooting a beam of X-rays at the scrap, we can immediately read its exact chemical composition, checking the percentage of tungsten, cobalt, and any trace metals.
Locations & Travel
Where is Carbide Buyers Canada based?
We are based in Ontario. Our sorting and consolidation warehouse is located in Ontario, allowing us to easily service the GTA, Southern Ontario corridor, and neighboring areas.
Do you travel to other provinces like Quebec, Alberta, or Nova Scotia?
Yes. We travel across Canada. We run routine logistics routes through Quebec (Montreal, Laval, Quebec City), the Maritimes, and coordinate heavy bulk collections in Western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia).
Why does my location affect the final price per pound?
Transport and logistics represent a significant overhead in metals recycling. Bins and buckets of carbide are extremely heavy. Because transit costs are lower for locations closer to our Ontario sorting facility, customers in Ontario generally receive slightly higher base rates.
Can I drop off the material at your warehouse?
We operate primarily as a mobile pickup service, bringing scales and testing equipment directly to our clients. Please contact us to coordinate delivery or drop-offs.
